Mandatory units

All learners who enrol upon this course will need to complete these mandatory units. These units are standard to every learner, regardless of their pathway choice. These units will help the learner:

  • Use and develop systems that promote communication
  • Promote professional development
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Develop health and safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices in health and social care or children and young people’s settings
  • Work in partnership in health and social care or children and young people’s settings
  • Undertake a research project within service for health and social care or children and young people

Pathway choices

When a learner enrols on the course, they will also have to choose a pathway that is most applicable to their working environment. The pathways we offer are:

Pathway B – Children and young people residential

This course is ideal for learners who work with children and young people in a residential environment (such as a care home). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, safeguarding children and young people, and how to assess an individual in a health and social care setting.

Pathway E – Adult residential

This course is ideal for learners who work with adult learners in a residential environment (such as an elderly care home). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, protecting vulnerable adults and managing group living for adults.

Pathway F – Adult non-residential

This course is ideal for learners who work with adults in a non-residential environment (such as a day care service). This course will teach learners how to manage a team, lead active support and develop procedures and practice to respond to concerns and complaints

Assessment

This qualification is competency-based, with evidence being gathered by the candidate as they undertake their normal work duties day-to-day. This content will form the basis of their portfolio. The evidence must reflect policies and procedures of the workplace as stated by current government legislation.

Throughout the qualification candidates must work with a minimum of two service users. The assessor will use a variety of assessment methods. Direct observation, examination of work products, and even testimonies by expert witnesses will all be utilised to determine success. One of our assessors will visit you at your workplace during your qualification to undertake observations of you at work. These shadowing sessions will be planned in order to capture the required amount of information in one visit and to try and cause minimal disruption to your routine and employer.

Knowledge-based units will be assessed using a range of methods, including projects, reflective accounts, assessor questions, assignments and professional discussions.

Candidates will have full access to support from our assessors via telephone, email, and web links.

Entry Requirements

All learners must meet these entry requirements to be able to complete the course:

  • This qualification is suitable for learners of 19 years of age and above.
  • Learners must be in a voluntary or paid role within the sector.

Average completion timeframe

On average most learners will complete in 6 to 9 months. Some may take less time depending on their personal circumstances and how much time they have available to dedicate to the course. We will work at a pace that suits you. You will have full uncapped support for 12 months

Assessment requirements

You will be assessed through a combination of observations, case studies, witness statements, written questions, and discussions. You will build up a portfolio of evidence. This will be in the form of written statements or ‘Reflective Accounts’ along with supporting work products you have produced.
An assessor will visit you in the workplace at some point and undertake observations of you at work. This will be planned in advance in order to cause the minimum disruption to your work routine and to try to capture as much information as possible in one visit. You may also supply witness testimonies or statements from third parties with whom you work. This may include supervisors or a line manager or other suitably qualified individuals that understand your job role and the standards you have to meet in order to obtain this level of qualification.

Placement or Practical requirements

Learners must be working in a care environment (whether that is employed, or they are on a temporary placement), and they must have a supervisor or manager who can verify their work when necessary (as per the criteria). Please note: The term verify does not mean the same as 'signing work off' - it is someone who can confirm that the learner did what they are saying they did. Our assessor will make the judgement as to whether the work submitted meets the criteria. If on a placement it must be for at least 50 hours, over a period of time in their studies.
